Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care

General Description: 

This qualification reflects the role of workers in a range of early childhood education settings who work within the requirements of the Education and Care Services National Regulations and the National Quality Standard. They support the implementation of an approved learning framework, and support children’s wellbeing, learning and development.

This qualification covers the fundamentals of early childhood development, education and care. Upon completion of the Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care, you will have the skills, knowledge and experience to plan experiences to promote children’s learning through play.

The purpose of this course is to guide students to become competent as early childhood educators. The role of educators in early childhood education and care sector involves working with children to plan activities and provide care to children, facilitating their leisure and play and enabling them to achieve their developmental outcomes. Depending on the setting, workers may work under direct supervision or autonomously.

Workplace requirements

As part of this course you are required to undertake 120 hours of Structured Workplace Learning in a registered child care facility, supervised by a qualified staff member. AUSCHS can provide assistance for the same.

There are a number of statutory checks required by workplaces, such as a Working with Children Check. These may vary by state. In addition, individual workplaces may impose additional requirements on students undertaking work placement. You will be responsible for the costs of any such checks or requirements. Please contact us to know details on the individual statutory requirements for your state or territory.

You will also need to complete a First Aid Certificate to demonstrate competency for HLTAID004 Provide an emergency first aid response in an education and care setting at your own cost prior to undertaking your work placement.

Physical requirements

You will need to be reasonably physically fit as the role may involve a variety of tasks that require a reasonable amount of physical activity, such as personal care of children, lifting, cleaning and other physically demanding activities.

NSW MINISTRY OF HEALTH WORK PLACEMENT REQUIREMENTS AND ADVICE

National Criminal Record Check

Before you undertake clinical work placement in a NSW Health facility you will be required to undertake a Criminal Record Check (CRC) to obtain a National Police Certificate, either through a state or territory police service or through the Australian Federal Police. If you have any criminal records, you will be subject to a risk assessment and must obtain an authority to undertake clinical placements from the NSW Ministry of Health, Corporate Governance and Risk Management Branch. You will only be exempt from undertaking a CRC if you are under 18 years of age at the commencement of your course.

COMMUNITY AND CHILDREN'S SERVICES WORK PLACEMENT REQUIREMENTS AND ADVICE

NSW Working with Children Check

Depending on the organisation's work placement policy and procedures, you may also be required to complete a NSW Working with Children Check.

    Under the Children's Services Regulation 2004 you cannot be employed in children's services until you are 18 years of age.

  • Course Duration: 

    Typically this training course requires between 0.5 months -2 year to complete, determined by your own special circumstances and also the mode of study which you select. For example, if you were to do this program online and routinely allocate time and energy to complete the activities and assignments every week you may finish the course well ahead of the time.

    Method of Study: 

    Delivery Arrangements

    A flexible blended environment applies to the target group being a combination of practical at the workplace, self-paced/ tutorial/ classroom workshops.
    The duration of this qualification may vary as determined on prior learning and credit transfer eligibility.
    Students will be provided with a training schedule and training plan to guide them through the units of study.
    Students with identified needs may be contacted more frequently, as agreed, to provide additional, individual tutorial activities including where applicable tutorial activities.

    This program is designed with client-specific requirements in mind and can be customized to suit unique student needs while maintaining the integrity of the training package. Therefore, we strive to develop students' skills, knowledge and aptitudes in the key areas of best practice in Community Services Sectors.

    Training Delivery will mainly be via:-

    Course Delivery Environment

    The environment where the qualification will be delivered includes:

    •Work-based Training only,
    • Industry visits,
    • Learner guides, Skills Workbooks and assessment tools,
    • Vocational Placement Pack,
    • Up to date technical equipment for the trainer and worksite staff and access to a suitable worksite,
    • Simulated work/industry environment,
    • Work in industry/vocational (work) placement,
    • Skilled trainers and assessors

    Many times, the students are given access to actual commercial Individual support facilities where the students have the opportunities to use the equipment, infrastructure set up for real clients and these facilities are also used for simulations.

    Assessment Methods

    Assessment methods will be Observations/Demonstration, Written activities, Workplace Diary, Third Party reports, Written Questions, Case Studies, Role plays, and Projects. Some assessments require the student to video or audio record their assessments as part of the Assessment Strategy.

    Note: You must be deemed competent with each unit in order to receive your qualification including completing the work placement requirements for units that have these mandatory requirements.

    Supervised study is face to face training at the workplace.

    Supervised study hours include assessments that are conducted at workplace in the form of observations and/or assessments.

    Unsupervised study includes additional time must be spent by the Candidate. This includes self- paced learning/home study and may also include formative assessments that are undertaken by the Candidate to facilitate assimilation of knowledge.

    Simulated Work Environment

    If a simulated work environment is required, it will be achieved by using suitable facilities, equipment and resources including individualised plans and equipment outlined in the plan, modelling of industry operating conditions, including presence of problem-solving activities and organisational policies, procedures and protocols.

    Education and support Services

    In accordance with the requirements of Standards for RTOs 2015, the following support is available to learners:
    Language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) advice. The ACSF informs the identification and description of underpinning English language, literacy and numeracy features and requirements within competency standards. LLN requirements of participants will be assessed using LLN assessment form completed upon enrolment. LLN needs of Learners will be taken into consideration in the delivery and assessment of this qualification.

    • Delivery modes are negotiated to meet the needs of a diverse range of learners.
    • Entry to courses is in accordance with equal opportunity legislation, anti-discrimination legislation.
    Support strategies include:
    • Identifying requirements (such as literacy, numeracy, English language or physical capabilities) learners would need to complete each course and if necessary, referring them to specialist services prior to enrolling in the course.

    Course Category: 

    This course falls within the Community Services & Health class of courses. Community Services is the study of social assistance which is designed to assist persons, individually and collectively, improve their own social and financial wellbeing. The principle role of this range of education and learning is to grow an understanding of the social, political and financial climate where social policy is actually developed, administered and integrated, the social expectations of individuals, groups as well as communities within contemporary society, the resources that are available to fulfil these needs, and also the social influences that effect the conduct along with social functioning of people. You'll find it involves developing an ability to plan and present welfare programs, and arrange resources in order to meet individual and community needs. This area involves courses like: Social Work, Children’s Services, Youth Work, Care for the Aged, Care for the Disabled, Residential Client Care, Counselling and Welfare Studies. Health is the study of maintaining and restoring physical and mental wellbeing. The primary objective of this particular field of education is to be able to build up comprehension of the principles in addition to practices of identifying, treating, controlling and preventing injury and health issues. In addition, it involves forming knowledge of the concepts and methods of supplying preventative, curative, rehabilitative in addition to palliative therapy. This area features courses including: Medical Studies, Nursing, Pharmacy, Dental Studies, Optical Science, Public Health, Radiography, Rehabilitation Therapies and Complimentary Therapies to mention a few.

    Prerequisites: 

    There are no formal prerequisites for this qualification.

    Whilst there are no formal entry requirements into this qualification, to provide learners with the greatest potential for successful completion recommends learners:
     Are physically, mentally and emotionally healthy to respond appropriately to children's needs.
     Be working in the industry
     Have a reasonable level of fitness to cope with standing, lifting, bending, twisting and reaching.
     Can remain focused while children learn through play experiences and have the ability to anticipate difficulties or dangerous situations and intervene quickly.
     Can meet the duty of care obligations, including supervision and assisting children with their self-care needs.
     Can interact and communicate in a calm and caring manner
     Can interact effectively with family members and staff and have basic conflict resolution skills.
     Enjoy working in a professional setting and are punctual, reliable, show initiative and can take direction.
     Have LLN level to be able to fulfil the above requirements

    Recognition of Prior Learning: 

    Recognition is available (on application) to students with prior skills, experience, knowledge or qualifications obtained from formal studies or training, in a related area. Recognition may reduce the duration of your studies (Subjective to evidence provide, mapped and assessed against the required unit/s of competency)

    RPL is available for each Unit of Competency-based on relevant workplace experience, formal training, or other expertise.
